Updates / News, 16 Jul 26
From Satupaitea, Samoa, Professor Asiata Dr Satupaitea Viali is the Vice Chancellor and President of the Oceania University of Medicine, where he is helping shape the next generation of doctors across the Pacific and beyond. Driven by a passion for medical education and research, he is committed to strengthening healthcare for Pacific communities through both teaching and discovery. At this year's PMA Conference, he will share insights into the relationship between the ghrelin hormone, fasting, and cardiovascular health, exploring how science and spirituality can come together to inspire healthier futures for Pacific peoples.
  1. Where you're from, your role and place of work

From Satupaitea, Samoa. I am the Vice Chancellor & President of the Oceania University of Medicine, based in Samoa, a medical school and university that trains doctors in Samoa, New Zealand, Australia, USA, Canada, and American Samoa.

  2. What are you passionate about and why?

Teaching medicine to the next generation, and passionate about research.

  3. You are scheduled to present on "Ghrelin Hormone and Cardiovascular Effects in Samoans and Pacific – Spiritual and Physical Hope for Heart Health" - what is this about and why is it important for our Pacific communities?

Ghrelin is elevated when you fast. Ghrelin calms down the heart and the cardiovascular system. Fasting has a spiritual purpose, and now has a cardiovascular saving effect.

  4. Words of advice/inspiration for people who are looking to pursue a similar career to you?

Work hard, work hard, work hard. Keep your faith stronger in the Lord daily. Be the best of what God has called you to do. Do not be lazy. I am the best that God has sent to help my people in Samoa.
