Where you're from, your role and place of work
I'm Tongan, from the villages of Lapaha and the small Island of 'Atatā in Tonga and now based at the Auckland University of Technology as a Senior Lecturer.
What are you passionate about and why?
I’m passionate about the immune system and the genetic determinants that shape immune function, particularly for Pacific peoples. Immuno-genetics remains an under-investigated area for our communities, and as a result our understanding lags behind those of other populations. This gap motivates my work, to deepen our knowledge of how immune mechanisms and genetic variations influence health outcomes for Pacific peoples and to support more equitable, effective precision medicine.
You are scheduled to speak on the Knowledge Panel - what are you most looking forward to discussing/sharing at the conference?
I’d like to discuss the development of new biomedical knowledge, particularly in immunology and inflammatory conditions, which is advancing rapidly internationally. I’m keen to connect with Pacific clinicians to share what can be done from NZ and to learn how clinicians can help shape research priorities. My goal is to ensure our studies are grounded in real bedside needs for Pacific populations, so that findings translate into more tailored, equitable approaches to prevention and care.
Words of advice/inspiration for people who are looking to pursue a similar career to you?
Explore all your options as an undergraduate, and don’t be afraid to try something new, especially if it interests you, even if you’re not confident in it yet. For postgraduate students in biomedical science, I encourage you to spend time in our clinic and laboratory to experience our work and learn more about this field. These opportunities may not be obvious or readily available to you early in your studies, this can be an opportunity for you to experience different areas of study and research
