Dr Fiona Perelini’s recent appointment to the Pasifika Medical Association (PMA) Membership Board represents a significant step in her journey to support and uplift Pacific health professionals while advancing health equity for Pacific communities. Her passion for giving back, coupled with her extensive experience as a paediatric intensive care specialist, uniquely positions her to contribute to this role.

Dr Perelini's inspiration to take on the role with the PMA Memberships Board stems from a blend of personal experiences and professional aspirations.

“I want to help our Pacific medical professionals connect, lift each other up, and support one another as we work towards health equity for our people. I remember being part of the PMA conference as a medical student and enjoying the networking and connection.”

Dr Perelini's journey toward paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) was shaped by her deep passion for helping children, particularly in critical moments.

“I began my career in paediatrics and while passionate about helping children get better, as I progressed through my training, I quickly realised that I thrived in emergencies.”

“Being part of a critical care team and helping children get the heart surgery they need gives them the best chance at a healthy life.”

Dr Perelini has been part of the PICU team at Starship Hospital since 2018, where she has worked alongside some of the most skilled professionals in the field, providing critical care to children who need it most.

While her career has been filled with numerous milestones, Dr Perelini identifies her experience in Samoa during the 2019 measles epidemic as one of the most emotionally rewarding moments of her professional life. The tragedy of the epidemic, which saw a significant number of children critically affected by the disease was heartbreaking.

“Being able to contribute and help to treat some of the critically unwell children in the ICU in Samoa during that time was incredibly powerful.”

Dr Perelini is a staunch advocate for the unique role that Pacific health professionals play in improving healthcare outcomes for Pacific communities.

“I truly believe that we are here to be a voice for our people, to serve and support.”

As a newly appointed member of the PMA Memberships Board, Dr Perelini envisions a strong and proactive role for the PMA in advocating for the Pacific community within the medical profession.

For Dr Perelini, PMA’s mission of creating a ‘For Pacific By Pacific’ approach is not just a vision, but an essential component of improving healthcare outcomes for Pacific peoples.
