Fifteen mothers from Vanuatu, Samoa, Tuvalu, Kiribati, and Fiji accompanied their children to Fiji’s capital so they could receive lifesaving cardiac surgery. Ni-Vanuatu mother, Melinda, shares what life was like as she put everything on hold for her fourteen-year-old daughter, Adriana, to receive this surgery.
“Coming here was difficult, dealing with my child’s medical condition and having her go through an operation. Now that it’s over, I am just so relieved.
"For us, her heart condition was always there, and sooner or later something had to be done. I am so happy that this is all in the past now.”
Melinda reflects on how the supportive environment created by the mothers and families played a pivotal role in carrying them through these challenging times and how they are forever bonded by their shared experience.
“It’s like we’ve made a new family. Everyone was so supportive—from our accommodation, to the hospital, to the PMA, but especially the other parents who came for this project with their children. They provided the support and love that lifted our spirits throughout the process.
"Now that it’s over, we are grateful for the opportunity, for the gift of life, and that my child can now have the same opportunities as other children.”
