Providing a culturally safe training space for Pacific physician trainees

Paediatrician Dr Joshua Agnew, of Cook Islands descent, currently works in Tauranga Hospital with a passion for heart health, as well as Māori and Pacific health. As part of his roles within the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and the Paediatric Society of New Zealand, he will be presenting at the upcoming Pasifika Medical Association Conference.

What are you passionate about and why?

I am passionate about system change. The health care system doesn’t work well for our Pacific patients or workforce. We need to shift the way we work to make safer spaces for our Pacific peoples (both patients and workforce).

You are scheduled to present on "Pacific Paediatric Workforce Development and Support (RACP PPMAG)" - what is this about and why is it important for our Pacific communities?

The work that we are doing with the RACP and Paediatric Society is important to help us provide a culturally safe training space for Pacific physician trainees, to make hospital medicine (both Paediatric and Adult medicine) a viable and attractive option for our Pacific workforce to ensure that we can have proportional, flourishing and a well-trained workforce that can serve our community.
