The award recognises Dr Burling’s years of service through surgical care, mentorship and capacity building, particularly in the field of gynaecological oncology. 

“It is a great honour to be recognised, especially with all the people that were awarded this award on the night,” Dr Burling said. “I’m humbled and thankful for the opportunities that PMA has given me to work with them to provide surgical care, mentorship and capacity building throughout the Pacific.” 

Dr Burling’s connection with PMA began in 2004, when he was a medical student. 

“I joined PMA for mentorship and help while studying at university,” he said. 

More than two decades later, that early connection has grown into a career-long commitment to working alongside Pacific health professionals and communities. 

As a gynaecological oncologist, Dr Burling has had the privilege of working with PMA across Tonga, Samoa and Fiji, as well as supporting colleagues in Vanuatu. 

His work has involved providing specialist surgical care, mentoring local clinicians and contributing to surgical capacity building — helping strengthen the ability of Pacific health systems to provide care closer to home. 

These relationships have also opened the door to broader collaborations focused on sustainable cervical cancer prevention and care across the region. 

For Dr Burling, the impact extends beyond individual procedures or clinical interventions. It is about building lasting capability and supporting Pacific colleagues to lead and deliver care within their own communities. 

Reflecting on his advice to the next generation of Pacific leaders, Dr Burling draws inspiration from the ocean voyaging traditions of Pacific peoples. 

“I truly believe in the ‘way finding’ as people of the sea,” he said. “To truly see where we are going, we need to know where we have been and where we are now.” 

He sees the challenges and obstacles encountered along the way as part of the journey. 

“The challenges and obstacles along the way are just storms and currents that we will always navigate through to achieve our goals.” 

His message is also a reminder to remain grounded in identity and heritage. 

“Don’t forget the Pacific and our roots as we represent our identity every day and whatever we do.” 

Dr Burling’s PMA Life Award celebrates more than 20 years of connection with the Association and his contribution to strengthening specialist health care across the Pacific. 

His journey reflects the power of partnership — combining specialist expertise with mentorship, local knowledge and a shared commitment to building stronger, more sustainable Pacific health systems.
